April 11th was Clara’s 7th birthday and this time for party favors we made little origami animals and filled them with candy. Our favorite was the bird (made by Paula) you can see here in the center, which was inspired by the character Kevin from the movie Up. We liked him so much we didn’t end up giving him away…
For 3 hours our patio was invaded by 20-some 5-7 year olds, scarfing down candy, potato chips, and cake and listening to One Direction. We tried (with variable success) to involve the kids in games like freeze dance.
Laura made a delicious cake: Chocolate and coconut with dulce de leche frosting and LOTS of sprinkles.
At night the whole extended family (aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, family friends etc. — approx 30 people) showed up for Part 2 of the party, which ended around 2 a.m. with the adults drunkenly dancing to anything from cumbia and reggaeton to David Bowie. I am consistently impressed that ALL extended family members show up for EVERYONE’S birthday. Then again, it’s much less common for people to move far away from their families here, so it’s pretty easy to get everyone together. For us, it meant getting to eat two birthday cakes in one day 🙂
Since January I have been taking circus arts workshops and classes at two different studios downtown. Though I love both lyra and tissue/silks, I chose to sign up for a tissue class this March because I find it to be more of a challenge… and therefore more satisfying when I’m finally able to do certain tricks!
It’s also an incredible ab and arm work out. I’ve fallen in love with one studio called La Caracola (The Snail), a huge warehouse-like space full of light, and my teacher is excellent. The class includes everything from improvisational modern dance to theater exercises to partner stretching/yoga to more strict aerobic/muscle strengthening exercises and of course, we learn how to do different tricks on the tissue. The classes are Tuesday and Friday from 3-5:30 and it’s easily the best part of my week.
